ADPD and Momentum have agreed to work together ahead of the upcoming general election, after concluding talks on a co-operation agreement.

According to a joint statement, the two parties held a series of meetings at which they agreed that each would retain its own identity.

"There are enough shared thoughts and ideas on which collaboration can be based," said ADPD and Momentum on Friday morning.

The agreement covers two main areas: coordinating which candidates contest which districts, and sending a clear message to the electorate to make good use of the transferability of votes. Under the arrangement, voters who back ADPD candidates are being asked to continue their preferences towards Momentum candidates, and vice versa.

The parties said the aim of the exercise is to strengthen the voice and effectiveness of third parties together.

In March, MaltaToday confirmed that the two parties were in discussions on this.

MaltaToday’s latest electoral survey showed small parties getting a trust percentage of 6.2%. ADPD stood at 3.7% while Momentum stood at 2.1%.

ADPD was founded in 2020 following a merger of the two most prominent third parties in Malta, the green Democratic Alternative (AD) and the social liberal Democratic Party (PD). Alternattiva Demokratika was founded following the ousting of Wenzu Mintoff and Toni Abela from the Labour Party in 1989, who went on to form the party with a number of environmental activists.

Momentum was founded by independent politician Arnold Cassola following his relatively successful European Parliament Election campaign in 2024. Cassola was previously ADPD chairperson but left the party over disagreements on the stance the party was taking on abortion.
