Abela says government will publish Magħtab fireworks factory inquiry if magistrate allows it
Prime Minister Robert Abela pledges not to leave victims of Monday's fireworks factory explosion without support, and says the magisterial inquiry will be made public if the magistrate clears it
Prime Minister Robert Abela has pledged to publish the magisterial inquiry into Monday's fireworks factory explosion in Magħtab, saying he believes the findings should be made public once the investigation concludes.
Abela was speaking at his first press conference after his new cabinet was sworn in, where he faced questions about his government's response to the blast at the Ta' Lourdes Fireworks Factory in Maghtab on Monday.
The explosion left farmers with damage to their fields, killed farm animals, damaged property across the surrounding area, and sent footage around the world that made international headlines.
Victims had complained that political leaders and authorities remained largely silent in the days following the incident.
"If the magistrate allows it, we will publish it. I believe it should be open to the public," he said.
The prime minister expressed solidarity with all those who suffered damage and said his government was evaluating the situation and considering ways to offer help.
He drew a comparison with Storm Harry, the national disaster that damaged coastal areas in January, saying his government would not leave anyone without assistance.
Magistrate Joe Mifsud is leading the inquiry into the explosion.
