Mosta drug bust: One granted bail, another remanded in custody over cocaine trafficking
One man was granted bail while another was remanded in custody after they were arraigned in connection with the alleged trafficking of more than one kilogram of cocaine following a police operation that led to the seizure of drugs valued at around €160,000
31-year-old Jean Paul Spiteri, Gozo, and 33-year-old Justin Chetcuti, Mosta, were charged with associating with others for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, supplying or offering to supply the drug, and possessing cocaine in circumstances indicating that it was not intended for their exclusive use.
According to the prosecution, police investigations into suspected drug trafficking led officers to a residence in Mosta where drugs were allegedly being packaged for distribution. Searches allegedly uncovered more than one kilogram of cocaine, together with a separate quantity of around 70 grams of the drug. The drugs are allegedly valued at around €160,000
The court heard that Jean Paul Spiteri allegedly attempted to evade arrest by fleeing onto the rooftop of the residence before he was eventually apprehended by police officers.
A magisterial inquiry has been opened in connection with the case.
Justin Chetchuti faces additional charges of allegedly committing the offences while subject to a probation order imposed in 2024 and of being a recidivist due to previous convictions.
Defence lawyers requested bail and argued that a treatment order should be considered. The court also heard submissions that the 31-year-old accused's last conviction dated back around ten years and related to a traffic offence.
The prosecution objected, arguing that investigations were still ongoing and that key witnesses had yet to testify. It also raised concerns regarding one of the accused's alleged drug use.
After hearing submissions, the court granted Jean Paul Spiteri bail against a €10,000 deposit and a personal guarantee of €40,000. He was also ordered to sign a bail book daily and observe a curfew requiring him to remain at home between 9pm and 6am.
Chetcuti was remanded in custody pending further proceedings.
Defence lawyers Nicholas Mifsud, Elaine Sammut and Nicole Falzon represented the accused. Inspector Mark Anthony Mercieca along with AG lawyer Daniel Tabone prosecuted. Magistrate Ann Marie Thake presided over the sitting.
