Relative increase in animal cruelty cases

More than 1100 cases of animal abuse have been reported in the past thirteen years, with one in every six arraigned in court.

Following a parliamentary question tabled by Nationalist MP Mario Galea, it has been revealed that 1,123 reports were made since 2000. These include 463 reports in the past five years, of which 78 were taken to court.

2002 saw the highest number of offenders being arraigned in court, as 30 out of 84 animal abuse reports ended up in court.

Awareness about animal welfare increased substantially during the years, especially after a dog named Star was discovered buried alive and shot in the head.

The case led to harsher penalties for animal cruelty acts.
