Frontex predicts increased migrant pressure this summer

EU border agency Frontex has released a report that states that thousands of migrants are waiting in Libya to make the crossing into Europe, The Times reports. The political instability in Egypt will also be a factor in increasing migration and as the weather begins to improve, so traffickers will be making preparations for the sea crossings.

At almost 8,000 individuals, unemployment a major concern

In-Nazzjon reports that unemployment has hit a record high this year, with more people registering as unemployed in both Malta and Gozo. There was also an increase in the number of people having been registered for a year or more.

Inquiry into Racing Club theft ongoing

After this newspaper reported on a theft at the Marsa Racing Club’s betting office, the Club has come forward to say that the investigation into the theft was initiated immediately after it was discovered and that there have already been interrogations related to the crime.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat abandoned his first nomination for President, George Vella, to avoid conflict with the Mintoffian elements within his party. Instead he nominated Family Minister Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, despite doubts as to her suitability for the post.
