Gozitan farmer has benefits suspended

Gianni Attard, the Gharb farmer who has been locked in a legal battle to keep his unregistered sheep from being culled, has had his employment, medical and supplementary benefits suspended. He has also been asked to repay the €17,000 he has received since 2010 as there is suspicion from the Social Security Department that he is involved in economic activity.

€30,000 theft kept under wraps

A theft from the Marsa Racing Club’s betting office has remained unpublicized by officials, L-Orrizont reports. The money, as well as the safe it was kept in, was stolen in late January, along with betting records.

Malta’s reputation in the film industry in peril

Film Commissioner Engelbert Grech told L-Orrizont that Malta, aside from lacking an active film industry of its own, has lost its good name within the wider film industry as a shooting location. Grech said that the incentives offered by the Film Commission to foreign directors and producers were not enough and that the public’s attitude needs to change too if Malta is to regain its good reputation.

Leader of the PN Simon Busuttil has called the government’s reaction to the bribery and electricity thefts ‘scandalous’ and ‘unacceptable’ in a democratic country. He contrasted this with the swift and harsh action taken by the PN government in the face of corruption.

Staff in health centres and Mater Dei has resorted to finding patient records in roundabout ways, according to an investigative exercise carried out by The Independent. The in-house IT system lacks several basic functions, including the ability to run a quick search for patients using their name, surname or locality.
