Gozo Channel losses down by 38%

Gozo Channel registers fewer losses in 2013, registered €1,670,835 in the previous year

Gozo Channel registered 38% less loss in 2013 than it did in the previous year, a difference of €635,582, Gozo minister Anton Refalo said today.

In reply to a Parliamentary question by opposition MP Chris Said, Refalo explained that in 2013, the company’s income totalled €12,238,658 while its expenditure stood at €13,237,911.

In 2012, Gozo Channel registered a staggering €1.67 million loss after seeing its expenditure reach €12,832,226 while its revenue stood at €11,161,391.

Refalo also tabled information on the number of passengers and vehicles which travelled to Gozo in 2013. Gozo Channel ferry boats carried 1,630,439 commuters, of which over 500,000 were Gozitans and around 1.2 million Maltese and foreign passengers.

The company raked in €4.6 million in fares from commuters and a further €5.8 million in fares for vehicles.

In 12 months, Gozo Channel carried 514,362 vehicles, of which 275,000 belonged to Gozitans.
