Speaking of the Opposition’s criticism over the government’s lack of consultation on her appointment, PN secretary-general Chris Said warns that once the minister assumes her presidential role, “she has to refrain from partisan politics and be a unifying president, similarly to her predecessors.”

Said also acknowledges Coleiro Preca’s contribution to politics and the country as social solidarity minister.

Coleiro Preca will be hosted tonight by presenter Saviour Balzan, to try and understand what the “new purpose” to the presidency will be. What is the new role of the President? Will Coleiro Preca have executive powers? Does being the youngest ever president change her role?

After emerging as the most popular minister in MaltaToday surveys, Coleiro Preca becomes the second female president in Maltese history after Agatha Barbara, and the fifth such nomination from a Labour administration.

Coleiro Preca has insisted that she will continue to be a voice for the people, and to highlight the needs of the underprivileged and the emarginated.

She served as a member of the National Executive of the Labour Party and assistant secretary-genral and then secretary-general of the party (1982–1991). To date, she is the only woman to have served in such a senior post of a Maltese political party.

Reporter is aired live every Monday at 6:55pm on TVM. The programme is repeated on TVM2 on Monday at 10:15pm.
