Left-wing leader pushes for anti-bailout party alliance
Left-wing Syriza Bloc leader, Alexis Tsipras, says he will try to form an alliance to avoid the ‘barbaric’ EU/IMF bailout deal.
Results remain inconclusive after continued attempts to form a government after Sunday’s elections by leader of the left-wing Syriza Bloc.
Describing the terms of the EU/IMF bailout deal as ‘barbaric’, left-wing leader Alexis Tsipras said he would try forming an alliance based on tearing up the terms of the deal.
He will be meeting with the two mainstream pro-bailout parties, Pasok and New Democracy (ND), today in an attempt create the alliance against the bailout.
However, Greece could face new elections in just weeks should an agreement not be reached by the two sides.
Tsipras hopes for a government which will withdraw from commitments made toward Greece’s bailout agreement and avoid austerity measures.
An agreement was made with one centre-left party on Tuesday but party leaders who signed the bailout agreement may have difficulty agreeing to Tsipras’s terms.
