Footage has reached MaltaToday that shows illegal fishing taking place in the waters around Filfla.
The area around the island was designated a Marine Protected Area in 2010 along with three other sites, in large part due to the occurrence of Posidonia meadows.
In the Mediterranean, this habitat provides both food and shelter for a number of marine species, acts as a carbon sink and protects sandy beaches from sand depletion.
