Prosecution asks court not to imprison man who threatened girlfriend

Man who threatened his girlfriend should be given the guidance of a probation officer rather than serve time behind bars, court hears.

Renald Haymen, 32 of Senglea earlier this afternoon, pleaded guilty to threatening his girlfriend during an argument in his hometown.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti heard the prosecuting inspector say that a term of imprisonment would not help the man.

“What he needs is guidance”, Inspector Robert Said Sareo told the court.

Defence lawyer Licio Sciriha, told the court that Haymen had managed to behave for a number of months, before hitting the bottle again.

“The help of a probation officer would ensure that the progress the accused has achieved, would not be lost”, the lawyer said.

When asked what he does in life, the accused replied “gym”.

When the registrar repeated the question, Haymen replied that he is unemployed but spends all his time at the gym.

He pleaded guilty to threatening his girlfriends and disobeying police orders.

Considering the accused’s guilty plea, Magistrate Giovanni Grixti postponed the case for tomorrow to deliver his sentence.
