Two 27-year-old Britons on a holiday in Malta landed in hot water with the St Julian’s police this morning, after they stole a rowing boat before paddling away to a nearby yacht while its owner was fast asleep.

The incident occurred this morning at around 6:00am, when the Britons – who were reportedly drunk – first stole a rowing boat from Spinola Bay. Undeterred by the arduous task of pedalling away a small rowing boat, the men nevertheless set off on a trip to a nearby yacht.

Once on board the yacht, the Britons then stayed there for several hours until (fellow) boatmen and passers-by spotted them reported them to the police.

Upon paddling towards the shore, the men were met by several police officials led by Sergeant Ramon Mifsud Grech, and were subsequently taken to the police station for further questioning.

Meanwhile, police got a lift from a nearby fisherman and set off to examine any damages that the yacht might have incurred at the hands of the Britons.

No damages were discovered, but unbeknownst to the police, (as well as the fisherman, who at this time was a spectator to all this) the best part was still in store: Out came the yacht’s owner, who despite having two Britons on board his yacht for several hours, was completely unaware of what had occurred as he was fast asleep.

Sources told MaltaToday that two Britons were let off with a warning after they returned the ‘stolen’ paddle boat.
