Spanish man handed suspended sentence, fined after starting bar brawl, assaulting police

Enric Sala Codina, 46, was arraigned before Magistrate Aaron Bugeja this afternoon, charged with having smashed a table at a bar in Sliema at around 2:30am yesterday, sparking off a brawl.

A court has remarked that it wanted to pass on the message that “we don’t live in a jungle” as it  handed down a suspended sentence and a €1,000 fine to a Spanish man who caused a bar brawl in Sliema in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Enric Sala Codina, 46, was arraigned before Magistrate Aaron Bugeja this afternoon, charged with having smashed a table at a bar in Sliema at around 2:30am yesterday, sparking off a brawl.

Inspector Jonathan Ransley told the court that Codina had then proceeded to assault the police when they arrived on the scene.

Codina was charged with threatening a police officer in the course of his duties, causing slight injuries to the officer, breaching the peace and public drunkenness. 

He pleaded guilty to all charges.

The court imposed a three-month prison sentence, suspended for a year and ordered the man to pay a €1,000 fine.

Lawyers Gianluca Caruana Curran and Giannella De Marco defended the accused.
