Police investigating Identity Malta worker for misappropriating passport funds

Identity Malta calls in police to investigate employee for alleged misappropriation of between between €20,000 and €25,000 in passport funds

Identity Malta has suspended an employee and called on the police to investigate him for potentially misappropriating of funds from the granting of passports.

Parliamentary secretary Julia Farrugia, who is responsible for Identity Malta, said that the agency had noticed a discrepancy of between €20,000 and €25,000 when it was reconciling its accounts.

Identity Malta then found one of its employees in possession of tampered receipts. The employee in question admitted to having pocketed the funds and promised to return the money back, on condition that the police aren’t called in.

However, Identity Malta instantly suspended the employee and called on the police to investigate him.

“We will not tolerate any sort of abuse,” Julia Farrugia said.
