A slanderous SMS or email could cost you some €23,000

Think twice before you decide to offend a person by SMS or email - the gesture could cost you a fine of up to €23,293.73.

Sister newspaper Illum reports that the Act which regularises electronic communication states that when someone is found guilty of a defamatory act could be fined €23,293.73, if proven the offense occurred only once.

But if the offense is repeated, the fine is of €465.87 for each day the offense was carried out.

The fine includes also those found guilty of anonymous phone calls, as it is considered as illegal use of a telephone or mobile.

The Act also condemns those who threaten, offend, lie or humiliate through the use of all electronic communication including social networking sites such as Facebook.
