UHM calls for health and safety enforcement on the workplace

Union Haddiema Maghqudin’s (UHM) health and safety committee says workers are exposed to serious danger at the detriment of their lives as lack of safety measures are being noticed.

Referring to ongoing works on the Ġużè Ellul Mercer’s bridge in St Julian’s, UHM said the workers are being exposed to danger as none of the worker were seen wearing any protective harness.

Describing it as an “embarrassing scene”, UHM said more enforcement on the place of work should take place.

“We call on both employers and employees for more caution and apply preventive measures to safeguard the employees’ health and safety,” the union said. “It is a pity that such calls are falling on deaf ears, while workers are being put in dangerous situations to the detriment of their lives.”

The trade union added that enforcement of safety and security measure is in the interest of both the employer and worker: “It is however the employer’s responsibility to assure that the workers are not in danger.”

UHM also called on the Health and Safety on the workplace to investigate this case and other construction sites to reduce the risks of danger.

The union also criticised the fact that the law regulating health and safety has not yet been revised, despite promises to do so, and added that the fines for those found breaching the law are “ridiculous”.

Well said UHM All Unions in Malta should join forces in defending worler's rights in Malta, if they really have the worker's rights. There's a lot that workers have lost during the last years which should be givin back to the workers.
