Herrera optimistic about 16-year-olds voting in the next general election

Vote16 campaign may be extended to EP and general elections.

There is a “great possibility” that 16 year olds will vote in the next general election, at least according to Parliamentary Secretary for local government Josè Herrera.

In an interview with Sunday newspaper ‘Illum’, Herrera welcomed the Prime Minister’s approval for the Vote16 campaign to be extended to other elections beside the local councils.

“Yes, I’d say it is a great possibility. This is a progressive government and our Prime Minister is very demanding. He is a determined Prime Minister in seeing what needs to be done is done, without unnecessary delays. He is definitely not just a figure head!” Herrera said.

However, he noted that this depends on how the Vote16 campaign fares in the local council elections.

I ask the same question again. WOULD YOU TRUST ALL YOUR HOUSEHOLD BELONGINGS TO YOUR 16 YEAR OLD? Of course not. At 16 these are considered children and not mature adults, and yet you want to thrust the whole country in their hands? Is the government that hard up for votes? Let 16 year olds study and mature until at least they become 18 years of age. What is it with politicians that they want to hurry up politics into these 16 year old's lives so early?

I really do not believe that 16 year olds have enough maturity and wisdom to be voting in elections! They probably will just vote as there parents tell them to or will be naive and actually believe what politicians say!
