Attard councillor resigns from Labour but stays on as independent councillor

Attard Labour councillor John Bonnici has tendered his resignation from the Labour Party. However he announced that he will retain his seat as an independent Councillor in Attard.

In his resignation letter, which was published by the PL, Bonnici explained that he was resigning from the PL so that his actions “do not in any way” harm the party.

Bonnici expressed his ‘sorrow’ for what he had done. However, he insisted that he had done this “without trying to harm anybody and to try and help”.

He explained how he had removed the obstruction “so that people with wheelchairs and prams could pass during the concert”

Bonnici insisted that the remainder of the allegations were “unfounded lies”.

“I never had expected the case to develop in this way. I now realise that this was an act of provocation which had been pre-planned,” Bonnici lamented in his resignation letter.

Bonnici explained how he had continued to work in the council right up until his arraignment, and no councillor had told him he did not wish to work with him.

“In view of the way the PN has concocted this issue, I feel I should resign from the Labour Party and not be considered anymore a councillor of that party,” Bonnici concluded his resignation letter.
