Part of the controversial Valletta expropriation deal with Mark Gaffarena saw the developer awarded parcels of land in Zebbug that are located right behind another area of land, within the Qormi boundaries, that he was also awarded. Gaffarena had illegally built an entertainment venue on the Qormi plot.

Referring also the the Gaffarena expropriation deal, shadow minister for justice Jason Azzopardi yesterday said that Gaffarena had picked out the lands he would be given himself.

A survey carried out in 2013 shows that 24% of children under 17 are at risk of poverty, while 14% of adults were found to be at risk. 15% of pensioners were also at risk of poverty.

Lino Bugeja, former and now honorary president of the Ramblers Association, has spoken out against the proposed development of a university at Zonqo point. The Marsascala resident said the Jerma hotel or Fort St Leonard would be better locations for the project.
