Prime Minister Joseph Muscat failed to entertain a question by opposition whip David Agius on who made use of his second car and why it consumes €114 of fuel every week.

The question was tabled in parliament by Agius following reports that the second car – a leased Chevrolet Captiva SUV – was being used by Michelle Muscat, wife of the Prime Minister.

“The second car is being used in the same manner that it was used during the previous legislature,” Muscat replied.

He added that the car travelled an average of 660 kilometres per week.

In previous parliamentary questions, Muscat said that the car consumed 87 litres of fuel per week, costing €114.

The Prime Minister’s own Alfa Romeo consumes an average of €70 per week for an average of 49 litres of fuel. Instead of leasing a brand new saloon car, Muscat opted to make use of his personal car for official use and, in return, receive a €7,000 yearly allowance.

The use of a second car is available to all Cabinet members, among others, to use when they are not on official duties.
