The nomination of former foreign minister George Vella as the 10th President of the Republic will be put to a vote in parliament on 2 April.

The decision was made during a meeting of parliament’s House Business Committee, on Wednesday.

Both government and Opposition MPs are expected to vote in favour of the nomination after Opposition leader Adrian Delia said the PN would be supporting Vella’s nomination.

Vella is expected to be sworn in two days later on 4 April.

The nomination will be one of two motions tabled by the Prime Minsiter that parliament will be debating. The second motion is one of thanks to outgoing President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca whose term ends the day Vella is sworn in.
