Five beaches where you can take your four-legged friend to swim

Four beaches in Malta and one in Gozo have been declared ‘dog friendly bays’.

Daħlet ix-Xmajjar at l-Aħrax tal-Mellieħa, Baħar ic-Ċagħaq behind the Splash and Fun, Tigne Point in Sliema, Marsaxlokk at Xatt is-Sajjieda and the Żebbuġ bay in Gozo have been declared dog-friendly bays.

This means that you can now take your furry four-legged friend with you to the beach. While the dogs can now swim at their heart's content, the legal obligations remain: dogs must be kept on leash at all times when not swimming; owners are required to carry a dog bag and immediately remove dog faeces; dog owners remain responsible at all times of their dogs' behaviour and fines may be imposed if legal requirmeents are ignored.

Addressing a press conference, parliamentary secretary for animal rights Roderick Galdes also said the areas will be regularly monitored in terms of seawater quality.

We got to show the public that we're an animal-loving nation which we definitely are not. Check out all beaches and observe the "mandra" left by the general public. After-bbq mess? Condoms? Sanitary towels? Rabbit skins? Syringes? Nature-calls?(even though latrines are provided)...?! Who's the cleanest? Dog or human? I wonder how these new legalities came about. How many vets were consulted on the matter? Who else was consulted? Was it only the animal-haters who drew up the plan?

and class C are the ones who do not want the dogs on the beaches. The owners cannot clean up after them on the pavements so what will it be like on the beach

Which means that you have to own a car to go to these beaches as you are banned from taking a normal sized dog on an Arriva bus. It seems to me that Malta is divided into two classes. Class A where the majority of regulations are to the advantage of car owners. Class B where if you don't have a car you are handicapped as the same regulations do not cover you. Say someone from the center of Malta who has a dog but has no car and wants to take it for a swin , how is he going to manage?

And you call these beaches. Some are probably not even accessible by car. And what about us poor pensioners whose only companions are our dogs. How are we going to go to these so called beaches. This concession is a gimmick and a farce. A pensioner in Rabat has to go to L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha to a "beach" no one has heard of, out of reach of the roads. What social justice is this???

Tigne' Point in Sliema; is that past the Fortina Hotel swimming pool?
