Disgraced police sergeant Glen Carabott granted bail over alleged home robbery
A former police sergeant accused of helping orchestrate the theft of firearms from an elderly man's home in Żejtun has been granted bail after a court found there was no longer a real risk of evidence tampering
A disgraced police sergeant who was previously charged in connection with an aggravated theft was granted bail on Tuesday.
46-year-old Glen Carabott, from Mtarfa, is accused of assisting two people in a home robbery targeting an 80-year-old man in Żejtun.
Prosecutors allege that Carabott drove the pair to the elderly victim’s home and waited outside while they stole two weapons from the property.
He was charged with possession of an illegal weapon, committing offences while acting as a public official, and breaching two separate sets of bail conditions. In 2021, after serving as a police officer for 18 years, Carabott was charged with raping a burglary victim.
During his arraignment, Carabott had requested bail, arguing that he is due to start new employment and that a protection order can be issued in order to protect victim. However, he was remanded in custody.
He was also refused bail in May.
During a court hearing on 28 May, parties made submissions regarding a fresh bail application filed by the defence, with the prosecution arguing against bail, due to a risk of contamination of evidence.
However, the court did not deem such fear to be real, since extensive witness testimony had already been heard.
The court granted him bail against a €4,000 deposit and a personal guarantee of €30,000. He has been ordered to observe a daily curfew and sign a bail book daily.
The prosecution was led by Inspectors Antonello Magri and Christina Delia, together with Attorney General lawyer Nicholas DeGaetano. Defence lawyer Nicholas Mifsud appeared for Carabott. Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo issued the decree.
