Five Civil Protection officers were today treated for smoke inhalation after a massive blaze engulfed a scrapyard in Ta’ Harbat, limits of Birzebbugia.

Another officer was treated for eye injuries after a nearby gas cylinder exploded. The fire is said to have started at about 11am, when for an unknown reason, a blaze engulfed an arid field before it spread to the scrapyard.

A huge cloud of smoke covered Birzebbugia, Zurrieq, Ghaxaq, and other nearby towns with eyewitnesses also saying that the cloud was also visible from Mater Dei Hospital.

The scrapyard is at an area known as Ta’ Harbat, behind Villa Overhills.

No one was injured in the fire. However, five CPD officials were treated for smoke inhalation, while another officer suffered slight injuries to his eye after a gas cylinder exploded.

Several fire engines were called in to control the fire.
