No bail for 32-year-old caught driving his mother’s car

32-year-old Christopher Schembri was accused of having taken his mother’s car from the garage against her wishes, driving a car without a road licence and switching the number plates with that of another vehicle.

A Sliema man has been remanded in custody this morning after his mother pressed charges against him for taking her Mercedes Benz out on the road without her consent on Tuesday morning.

Inspector Jason Sultana arraigned 32-year-old Christopher Schembri before Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras, accusing him of having taken his mother’s car from the garage against her wishes, driving a car without a road licence and switching the number plates with that of another vehicle.

The court was also told that Schembri did so whilst on bail in connection with two ongoing criminal cases.

Inspector Sultana explained that Schembri’s mother had alerted the police that her son was taking her car without her permission, insisting on pressing charges against him even after being cautioned as to the consequences.

The court, noting that he was being charged with breaching previous bail conditions and in view of the fact that he resided with the two main prosecution witnesses, his parents, denied the man bail.
