Bail was denied due to the nature of the crimes and the early stage of the investigations as well as because the accused had no fixed address

A man who attacked an injured a couple whilst drunk has been remanded in custody after denying responsibility for the incident.

Badreddini Osyad Fadoussi, 24, was accused of grievously injuring a woman and threatening another person yesterday in St. Rita street, St. Julians.

He was further accused of having insulted or threatened a police officer at the Floriana health centre, slightly injuring a police officer and resisting arrest.

The accused, a chef from Syria, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The court was told that he had been drunk and had ended up in a fight with the couple whom he didn’t even know.

The defence asked the court to order the prosecution to preserve CCTV footage in the areas listed in the charges and exhibit them in court, with a copy to the defence. The court upheld the request and appointed lawyer David Farrugia Sacco as court expert to complete this task.

Bail was requested. Although public officers were involved, he is presumed innocent at this stage, reminded lawyer Noel Cutajar. “This is why I am requesting CCTV because my client is telling me that things happened differently to what the police are saying.”

After looking at the facts of the case, the investigation could only have taken place in a 15-minute window, said the lawyer. “There are eyewitnesses who have definitely not been spoken to. I am informed that there were racial insults in several instances, too.”

Inspector Spagnol said the problem was that the accused had no fixed address and was living with his friends.
