Labour MP Chris Cardona, who is contesting the First and Eighth Districts, remarks that the turnout figures for the 8th District suggest either no shifts from the 2008 general election, or a swing of voters from the Nationalist Party to Labour.

Speaking to MaltaToday, Cardona said that given that the Eighth District turnout figures remained stable, this can mean that either "things remained the same as they were five years ago," or that "there was a swing from the PN towards Labour."

"I don't see the possibility of a swing in the other direction," he said.

Asked which issues that could have most influenced voters, Cardona said that on a national basis, "it was more about the change in direction from Gonzi's administration," while on a local level "the issues where that people were talking about a certain governmental arrogance"

"There was a government that did not heed to what the people were telling it, and became detached completely from the essential needs of the Maltese people," Cardona said.
