Government withdraws fireworks depot application on Dingli Cliffs

Had-Dingli local council expressed satisfaction at the Justice Minister's decision to withdraw an application to build a fireworks depot on Dingli Cliffs.

Dingli mayor Ian Borg said the whole local council was happy that the Home Affairs Ministry has decided not to build a Fireworks Depot on Dingli Cliffs.

The Dingli local council had pressured authorities to drop the application.

“The plan has been abandoned as confirmed by Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici. This detail is also visible on the MEPA’s website which shows the application was dropped,” Borg said.

The arguments and pressure made by the local council during the last few months achieved the desired result, Borg said.

“Again we see the local council is really the voice of its people,” Borg said.

The mayor added that the security of all those who enjoy the environment and the picturesque scenery offered by the cliffs in the Qaws zone is being safeguarded. The proposed intervention for the site of Natura 2000 Special Area of Conservation will also be safeguarded.

“At the same time the work of the local council to build a proposed Heritage Trail adjacent to the same development area is progressing well. Now we look forward to maximising the use of these pathways in wonderful countryside offered by Had-Dingli,” Borg said.
