Hunters' federation FKNK has condemned the shooting of a protected bird, a relatively rare Black Stork, in Buskett early this morning.

A birdwatcher who witnessed the shooting said six black storks arrived yesterday. While one roosted at Buskett, the others stayed near the cliffs.

FKNK said the bird has been handed over to the police and noted it had been noticed also yesterday evening with other birds, flying over different parts of Malta.

"The birds had continued on their south-west journey without incidents, as did other observed birds of prey, such as eagles and other raptors," FKNK said.

The federation encouraged its members and the general with any information to assist the police in their investigation by calling 21224001 or 119.

"We hope that those responsible for this cowardly act are apprehended and brought to justice," FKNK said.

"FKNK will do anything within its power to ensure that such primitive acts cease and thus safeguard the legitimate hunting and trapping Maltese traditions."
