229 drivers fail breathalyser test in the past three years

The test is aimed at curbing alcohol-related traffic accidents and sanction those driving under the influence of alcohol.

More than half of those requested to undergo a breathalyser test resulted positive, meaning they consumed excessive alcohol.

Answering a Parliamentary Question tabled by Jason Azzopardi, interior minister Manuel Mallia said that this year, 76 men and seven women were asked to take the test. 53 of those were found to exceed the alcohol limit.

Between 2011 and 2012, 305 persons took the test including 176 who resulted positive.

The test is aimed at curbing alcohol-related traffic accidents and sanction those driving under the influence of alcohol.

The preliminary check involves taking a sample of breath on the spot.

Less than 250 in three years? NOT very impressive. When one considers all the piss artist pouring out of Paceville every night, the police SHOULD be getting these numbers every MONTH!

It should be mandatory for any driver involved in a serious RTI to undergo such a test I would argue and if not practical to take a sample of blood (the only surefire method of proving a DUI case). What provisions do we possess to test for driving under the influence of illegal substances and how many of those Breathlysed drivers were non-Maltese -as this group seems to be predominantly singled out for these tests?
