PN deputy leader Mario de Marco today appealed to the government to show more sensitivity to sites of national heritage in Malta.

In light of yesterday’s decision by the government to expropriate the land adjacent to Ta' Hagrat temples, de Marco said there was need for more consensus between government and opposition to ensure transparency and regulation of what works could and could not be done in buffer zones such as that of Ta' Hagrat.

De Marco was speaking at a press conference alongside MP Ryan Callus and MEP candidate Francis Zammit Dimech. On his part, Callus said that yesterday’s decision went beyond party politics and was taken in the country’s best interests.

He said the PN had felt the need to intervene with its motion once it was clear that there was much public opposition to the plan. He said that it was their duty to protect such sites and expressed hope that further discussions would be held with government to safeguard against similar occurrences.
