A group of 83 migrants was rescued from waters south of Malta after a merchant vessel spotted their seacraft in distress, yesterday morning.

A dilapidated fishing vessel was towed to Hay Wharf with several corpses on board, after people were crushed below deck. The 400 survivors were taken to Italy.

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil has accused the government of a lack of trasparency after going ahead with the legislation to privatize Enemalta without first publishing the contracts made with the Chinese government, Shanghai Electric and Electrogas. The Opposition voted against the law because, Busuttil said, the government hid the important documents.

According to comments made to this newspaper by PL deputy leader Toni Abela, ex-Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami had a meeting with Abela and Wenzu Mintoff in 1989, urging the two lawyers to remain within the Labour Party. These comments come in the wake of Mintoff's controversial appointment as judge last week.

The Malta Independent

The government has organized a relief flight, which will leave Libya's Mitiga airport today at 3.30pm to evacuate Maltese citizens in the increasingly unstable country. The flight will have 75 seats available, at €260 each. Sources told this newspaper that the situation on the ground has not blown over and report increasing concern over the growing violence.
