Frontex Plus can never replace the Italian Mare Nostrum operation, said EU Commissioner for home affairs Cecilia Malmstrom yesterday. Malmstrom said that the EU does not have the funds or assets to replace the operation, which has saved about 100,000 lives in the Mediterranean.

A doctor at Mater Dei has admitted to making a 'gross error' when he wrote out a medical certificate for a woman he never examined. The Irish woman in question repeatedly breached bail conditions by failing to sign the bail book at the Mosta station.

An 18kg shipment of cannabis was discovered in a Sliema basement after a tip-off allowed the drug squad to follow a controlled delivery. The drugs were brought over from Sicily. The accused Angel Attard, a 32-year-old man from Gzira was granted bail.

The Malta Independent

The parliament in the Grand Master's Palace in Valletta has been earmarked for use by the EU Presidency in 2017, when it will be Malta's turn to chair it. Parliament is set to move to the City Gate building next month.
