A number of youths have successfully quit smoking, thanks to efforts from the Health Promotion Unit.

The problem of youngsters developing a smoking habit was highlighted last year, when MaltaToday published a story about how students attending Alternative Learning Programmes were allowed to smoke in their breaks.

Thanks to a smoking cessation programme, implemented by the Health Promotion Directorate, youth could make use of counselling services to help them combat the habit.

Participants were also given a money box, underlining how much smoking cost and how much an ex-smoker stands to save by quitting. The government also pledged to match the amounts saved and make a donation to a charity at the end of the year.
