In the Press: EU to seek UN support for migrant plan

The EU has requested authorization from the UN Security Council to begin efforts to stem the flow of migrants into Europe and prevent deaths at sea. The plan includes destroying smugglers' boats, although it is unclear how this is to be achieved. A meeting between EU foreign ministers, on 18 May, will be discussing the matter.

Government workers, using government-supplied materials, have in the past weeks resurfaced a private road in Nadur, easing access to a private property in the countryside. This newspaper reports that the property is owned by a nephew of a former Labour MP, someone allegedly close to minister Anton Refalo.

Opposition leader Simon Busuttil's appointment of Chris Said as shadow minister for Gozo is set, according to this newspaper, to result in upheaval within the party as former minister Giovanna Debono's supporters express dissatisfaction with her replacement.

The FBI and local police are said to be cooperating in the investigation into an alleged scam, which saw eight American investors lose $600,000 to two companies registered to an address linked to former EU commissioner John Dalli.
