A three-week Vatican synod came to a close on Saturday, with the overarching message of the bishops' meeting being a move towards an open church, which excluded no one and moved away from what Pope Francis called 'ultra-conservative' ideas.

The Nationalist party's General Council was brought to a close by leader Simon Busuttil, who said that the PN was the key to positive change in the country's governance.

PM Joseph Muscat said that although it may lose the Labour party votes, battling the abuse of social benefits was high on the government's list of priorities as the crime is tantamount to stealing from the country. 

The Malta Independent

A request for proposals for a new university residence complex has been issued, according to Rector Juanito Camilleri. The €20 million project would be built on the old Calamatta site, adjacent to the campus.
