PM Joseph Muscat said that the differences between EU and African countries had narrowed more than expected during the first day of the Valletta Summit, which saw the heads of more than 40 states convene to discuss migration.

The summit's opening was marked by a colourful ceremony, during which Vince Briffa's monument in Castille Square was unveiled. A minute of silence was also held to commemorate those who lost their lives while trying to cross the Mediterranean.

PM Joseph Muscat said that the laws about migration must change and EU Council president Donald Tusk called for the problem of trafficking to be addressed.

Foreign minister George Vella confirmed that Marisa Micallef, who served as Malta's ambassador to Washington, had stepped down from her post and that he was not aware of her reasons for doing so.
