Qormi undertaker to sue government
Qormi undertaker Carmelo Mifsud plans to hold government responsible for the losses he suffered during last week’s heavy rain.
As Malta’s roads turned into rivers, the flood waters burst open the undertaker’s warehouses damaging 12 cars and 800 coffins.
Still waiting for the surveyor’s analysis, Mifsud had originally estimated his losses at €350,000. This amount has now gone down by €100,000, not including the labour costs he has to pay to fix his 12 cars and the electricity in his garage.
Mifsud is now planning to hold the government responsible for the damages, saying this incident could have been avoided if there had been suitable road measures which would help the water flow into the valley.
At first, Mifsud had blamed his village’s local council, but the Qormi Local Council has turned the blame onto the government, claiming that this is a problem which has been repeating itself since 1979.
In the meantime, replying to a parliamentary question, the Finance Minister said, as in the case of floods, it is not government practice to cover such risks which are normally taken care by the insurances.
