In the first three months of 2017, the customs department has seized over 180kg of meat, dairy, and poultry products after carrying out personal luggage searches on passengers who had been flagged as "suspicious" after undergoing routine X-ray screening.

Among the items seized by customs were sausages, raw chicken, rotten meats and green eggs.

The items were seized as they are prohibited from entering into the EU due to heath risks, as are any of their by-products.

According to the customs department, most of the individuals from whom the items were taken were arriving from non-EU countries.

All seized items were handed over to the border inspection post of the health department in order to be destroyed.
