Turkish jets bomb IS positions in Syria for second consecutive night

In a second successive night of airstrikes, warplanes from the Turkish air force have targeted Islamic State (IS) positions in Syria, also attacking Kurdish militants in northern Iraq.

The air raid follows a bomb attack, attributed to IS,which killed 32 people in the Turkish town of Suruc and border clashes with the militant group earlier this week.

It marks the first time that Turkey had launched strikes on the Kurtdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) since a 2013 truce. The PKK seek the creation of an autonomous homeland for the Kurds and strife between the PKK and Turkey has been ongoing for decades.

A spokesman for the PKK's military wing said the group had killed two Turkish police officers on Wednesday, alleging that the officers had collaborated with IS in the bombing in Suruc.

A government statement issued earlier today said the air force had hit PKK shelters, bunkers, storage facilities and other "logistic points" in northern Iraq, including the Qandil mountains, which is the home of the the PKK's high command, but did not divulge details about the IS targets in Syria.

Turkey carried out hundreds of arrests of suspected IS supporters on Friday, saying it will let the US use a key airbase to attack IS targets.
