Sources close to the United States administration have said that Donald Trump’s tweet implying that the President knew that Michael Flynn, Trump’s National Security Advisor, had lied to the FBI, was actually drawn up by his lawyer.

The tweet, posted on the Trump’s Twitter account, read "I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies,"

However, the Washington Post has reported that its sources have said the tweet was written by John Dowd, the chief lawyer to the President.

The tweet, because it mentions lying to the FBI as a reason for Flynn ’s dismissal, suggests that Trump knew at the time that Flynn had broken the law.

It is a crime to lie to the FBI, something which Flynn acknowledged on Friday.

Flynn plead guilty to agreeing to cooperate with Robert Mueller’s, Special Counsel investigation on possible links between Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and the Russian government.

If the tweet was indeed written by Trump’s lawyer, this would weaken the connection between the President and the content of the tweet.
