Seven spectators attending a motorsport activity in Piedimonte, Sicily, this morning were injured in an accident involving a Maltese driver.

The Malta Motorsport Federation said in a statement that the accident happened at around 11.30am when the driver appears to have approached a bend too fast and driven off track into the spectators.

Investigations are being carried out by the para-military police, the Carabinieri.

No Maltese appear to be among the injured.

The Federation said it was in constant contact with the Maltese contingent in Sicily.

Lacking adequate facilities in Malta, numerous Maltese drivers are known to travel to Sicily frequently for weekend motorsport activities.
