Germany has the best record for penalty shoot-outs at the World Cup finals with a 4 out of 4 winning ratio.

Costa Rica's 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Greece in the round of 16 Sunday was the 24th match at a World Cup history to be decided in such a fashion.

Costa Rica and Greece were in their first shoot-out at the global showcase event.

Germany currently have the best shoot-out record of any country at the World Cup, with a 100 per cent record from four duels.

Sunday's was the second shoot-out at the 2014 event. The previous day, Brazil edged Chile 3-2 from the spot.

The record number of shoot-outs at one tournament are four, in 1990 and 2006.

Penalties were introduced at the 1982 World Cup in Spain to decide matches level at the end of extra time.
