Cospicua brawler handed suspended sentence for threatening police inspector in court

The accused apologised in today’s sitting and expressed remorse for his words.

Charleston Cassar, 22, from Bormla, was fined €1000 and handed a one-year jail sentence, suspended for four, after he admitted to threatening a police inspector.

Cassar, who is currently on bail in connection with the recent large-scale brawl in Cospicua, was accused of attempted murder. During a hearing for this incident he had threatened Police Inspector Josric Mifsud, saying, “if tomorrow I am not going to be with my girlfriend...” before trailing off.

The accused apologised in today’s sitting and expressed remorse for his words. His lawyer, Dean Hili, explained that at the time the accused was under a lot of stress as his girlfriend was due to give birth by cesaerean section for the fourth time in the coming days.

He was "worried about the health of the child and his girlfriend” and was unaware that he could be granted bail. He was distressed as he was expecting to be remanded in custody until the next sitting, explained Hili.

The defence conceded that the words had been uttered but that there was no real intent on the part of the accused. “The words were uttered out of anger and frustration”.

In deciding on sentencing, the court took into account the fact that the words were directed towards a police officer during the execution of his duties, his early admission of guilt and his clean police conduct.

The court imposed the fine and suspended sentence and imposed a three-year protection order in favour of Inspector Mifsud and his family.
