Rescuers force cellar door open to rescue a woman and her grandson trapped inside burning house


A boy and his grandmother, 64, have been rescued from a house in St Dominic Street, Sliema, after the residence caught fire ealier this morning.
Members of the Rapid Intervention Unit and Civil Protection Department were called to the scene by a passer-by, who reported hearing a woman and a boy calling from behind the cellar door.
The neighbouring property's cellar had a connecting door, which was forced open to allow the two to escape. They were taken to Mater Dei for treatment.
Two police officers were treated on site for smoke inhalation.
Two passers-by were also treated for smoke inhalation. One was a 68-year-old man from Sliema and the other was a 28-year-old from the Ivory Coast, who entered the house to help those trapped inside.
