Man admits to stealing luggage from airport arrivals

Somali man receives suspended sentence for stealing suitcase from airport

A man of Somali origin, resident in Xghajra, has received a suspended sentence after he pleaded guilty to stealing a suitcase from an airport carousel.

Inspector Silvio Magro arraigned Abubakar Ibrahim Mohamed, under arrest, before magistrate Giovanni Grixti this morning.  He was charged with stealing a suitcase containing €850 in cash, amongst other things, from the luggage carousel in the arrivals lounge at the airport.

The court was told how the accused had been apprehended at the airport after he was spotted nonchalantly picking up a suitcase from amongst the assorted luggage on the conveyor belt at MIA arrivals at around ten to three yesterday afternoon. The luggage belonged to a British couple, who alerted the police, resulting in Abubakar’s arrest.

The court imposed a sentence of 18 months imprisonment, suspended for two years after lawyer Joseph Brincat entered an admission of guilt on the man’s behalf.
