A French man has been convicted of simple theft after he admitted to stealing a replica firearm from a souvenir shop in Mdina.

Benjamin Vigo, 38, from Paris was arraigned by Police Inspector Stacy Attard before magistrate Charmaine Galea this afternoon, accused of stealing a replica firearm worth €43 from a shop in Mdina yesterday.

The man had been arrested after police, tipped off by the shop owner, asked the man for his receipt which he failed to produce.

In court, Vigo pleaded guilty to a single charge of simple theft.

The man was handed a two-month prison sentence, suspended for a year. The court explained the implications of this sentence to the man before letting him go.
