Air Malta mum on Selmun redundancies that precede tendering process

Air Malta fails to explain why it issued Selmun Palce Hotel redundancies before tendering process for hotel sale.

Questions sent to Air Malta asking for explanations as to why redundancies for the 58 workers of the airline subsidiary Selmun hotel were issued when buyers have expressed interest in purchasing the hotel with its employees, are being ignored.

Air Malta’s spokesperson referred this newspaper to previous statements. “Air Malta has no further comments to make at this time,” the spokesperson added.

The report also highlights how the redundancies were issued despite how the General Workers’ Union has long said that there were at least two buyers who have shown interest in buying the hotel and taking on its existing staff.

This much was also confirmed by Air Malta, who said that there were three buyers who have so far shown potential interest in buying the hotel company.

Government had also confirmed its intention to ensure that the hotels’ eventual buyer would also be obliged to take on the hotel’s current employees.

In this light, Air Malta’s persistence in issuing redundancies even before the tender process begins is all the more baffling – a situation not improved by its intransigence in ignoring questions sent by the media.
