The Marine Safety Investigation Unit (MSIU) and Merchant Shipping Directorate within Transport Malta said they are currently investigating the grounding of Malta registered motor ship MV Flash which was en route to Taranto, Italy from Baltimore, USA.

The grounding occurred early Monday morning in the vicinity of Galite Islands, north of the Tunisian coast.

The MSIU said that none of the 23 crew members were injured and no pollution has so far been reported while the Merchant Shipping Directorate is in direct contact with the managers of the vessel in order to closely monitor the situation.

Preliminary reports received by the MSIU indicate the vessel sustained structural damages in a number of ballast tanks and the engine-room.

A salvage operation is currently underway to lighten the vessel, which was carrying about 126,000 metric tonnes of coal on board, and pump out the bunker tanks

The MSIU said it was conducting its safety investigation in line with the relevant legislation and international maritime conventions.
