Weekly newspaper Illum reports that road works on-going for the past four weeks have hit local businesses in Siggiewi particularly hard, at a time of year when business and retail is particularly sensitive.

According to the report, the road works in question are being carried out by Enemalta in Qajjet Lane and Triq Nicola Saura.

The scene is one of destruction: the road is scarred by a half-dug and hastility filled trench along a long stretch of road, creating a veritable 'step' in the road due to a level disparity of several inches.

This badly filled trench, the newspaper reports, is causing a large volume of car traffic to opt to not flow through the area, meaning that the shops there are suffering from a downturn in customers.

"Business has dropped drastically and I have calculated that over the past three weeks I've lost around €8,000 in income," one shop owner is quoted as saying.

Residents have similarly complained about the inconvenience that the uncompleted works are causing them, not only in terms of flying dust and mud, but also regarding the extra wear and tear that the uneven road poses to their vehicles.

If this guy has a turnover of Eur8 000 in 3 weeks (that's almost Eur140 000 p.a.) he can hardly grumble about his lot. Furthermore a turnover of Eur8 000 includes 18% VAT, and 35% Income tax, so really he has only been deprived of only Eur4 000 net of taxes. Not the end of the world I suppose.
